General Information
The Department of Public Works (Department) formerly called the "Road Department" was established as a result of House Bill No. 4, which required the Board of Supervisors (Board) to operate a county wide system of road administration, effective October 1989. The Department operates under policies which have been adopted by the Board and by statutory authority in accordance with Section 65-17-1 of the Mississippi Code.
The administrative head of the Department is the Public Works Director/Road Manager, who is appointed by the Board, and is educated and experienced in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and other facets of public works responsibilities.
The Director/Road Manager oversees the construction and maintenance of approximately 900 miles of rural road and small urban roads, including 334 bridges throughout rural Hinds County, Mississippi.
The Department is comprised of four major divisions: Engineering and Development, Planning and Administration, Roadway and Drainage, Construction and Maintenance. Each division is managed and directed by a division head. Each division performs tasks that are unique to its specific purpose.
There are 121 full-time positions assigned to the department, administrative, construction and maintenance.
